Monitor: A Session with Charles Recher and Gustavo Matamoros

This recording was made March 29, 2006 in a session at iSAW while preparing materials for a collaborative piece we called, Monitor—a commission by the Ybor City Festival of the Moving Image. After recording a segment featuring Charles Recher (on the recorder) and myself (on the handsaw), something inexplicable happened. Here’s a transcript of our high-speed interaction:

[GM] woww… the… aaah… i don’t think that… i’ve ever done before. [CR] what’s that? … (while chuckling rhythmically) play-with-that-wha-ha-ha-i never-co… someone playing a recorder? [GM] no, no, no! i mean, i was just doing the sound of this… window that i was… (pause) [CR] what were you do-eye-eye-eye-i had my eyes closed all time… [GM] did you hear this? Did you hea… [CR] …yeah, yeah. i heard it. yeah, yeah, was great… [GM] …sounded like a wind… you know… like… [CR] …you, no, no! i… uh… [GM] …a wind through a window. [CR] …how did you get it? This interaction happens at the end of our performance and you can hear both, the performance and the exchange in the following audio recording:
