Permanent and temporary public sound art installations and large scale performances

  • Quail Roost Sanctuary by Gustavo Matamoros

    Quail Roost Sanctuary

Quail Roost Sanctuary is a permanent, site-specific sound installation situated within the breezeway connecting the parking structure to the new Eureka Drive rapid transit bus terminal at Quail Roost Station. Spanning 320 feet, the work investigates the site’s inherent acoustical identity, making audible the resonant frequencies embedded in its architectural form. As with much of the artist’s installation approach, the piece foregrounds the interplay between physical space and sonic perception. The soundscape integrates processed field recordings of quail and other South Florida fauna, creating a layered composition that situated environmental memory within an urban transit context.

A 180ft-long 16-point source sound installation using custom-built exciter-driven black tile speakers that hung from above suspended on aircraft cable. It operated 24-7, gently activating the entire length of the Performing Arts Building’s entrance hallway with the delicate sounds of insects flying away from bats, changing locations from one end to the other of the public access space, welcoming visitors into the building, guiding them to the gallery entrance and accompanying students transiting to their classrooms for the school year
