Masterworks of American Avant-Garde Experimental Film, 1920–1970 is a collection of landmark experimental films curated by film historian Bruce Posner and published by Flicker Alley. I contributed audio work to two films in the collection: Marcel Duchamp’s Anémic Cinéma and Fernand Léger and Dudley Murphy’s Ballet mécanique.
ANÉMIC CINÉMA
At Bruce Posner’s invitation, I composed an original stereo soundtrack for Marcel Duchamp’s Anémic Cinéma (1926). The soundtrack was commissioned specifically for this collection and completed on September 25, 2014.

BALLET MÉCANIQUE
I created a new surround mix of George Antheil’s score for Ballet mécanique (1924) from multitrack materials prepared and supplied by Paul D. Lehrman.
Paul sent me an unbalanced Digital Performer session containing the instrumental tracks, together with the existing stereo film soundtrack and a video of the 1999 live performance for reference. Working from those materials, I balanced the instrumental groups and determined their spatial placement and reverberation for the surround version included in the collection.
The source tracks combined recordings of sixteen Disklaviers with bass drums, tamtam, airplane propellers, siren, bells, pianos, and xylophones. The stereo film soundtrack served as a guide to the relative balances, while the organization of the surround field was left to me.
