SHIM | Big Tiny Music | BTCD 00001
SHIM is the first compact disc released by Big Tiny. Produced by Keith Hedger and issued in a cardboard envelope in 1996, the eleven-track album documents the Tampa Bay experimental music ensemble’s movement between composed and improvised music.
The CD includes a live performance of Gustavo Matamoros’s In Gated Memory of Gentle Giant, recorded at the Salvador Dalí Museum in St. Petersburg, Florida, on September 15, 1995.
IN GATED MEMORY OF GENTLE GIANT
Keith Hedger requested the work, which was performed by Hedger on trumpet and David Irwin on clarinet, with Gustavo Matamoros controlling the live electronics.
Each player performed into a separate microphone connected to an independently operating noise gate. When the amplitude of either instrument crossed its gate’s threshold, fragments of a prerecorded Noise Melody assembled from Gentle Giant recordings emerged. The two musicians could therefore activate one gate, the other or both gates through the dynamics of their playing, incorporating the recorded material into their improvisation.
The performance appears on the CD as an 8′37″ track.
